The firm’s founding partner,
Joseph B. Cheshire V, began practicing criminal
law in Raleigh in 1973, establishing a firm in 1978 with
John Hill Parker. In 1982, the practice moved to
its present home in the Alexander Building on Fayetteville Street Mall in
downtown Raleigh, conveniently located near the Wake County Courthouse, the
Federal Courthouse, and most state government buildings. Lawyers in the
criminal law section of the firm have appeared in criminal courts in 84 of
North Carolina’s 100 counties, 16 states and territories of the United States,
all of North Carolina’s federal districts, the Fourth Circuit United States
Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
From its inception, the criminal trial defense and appeals section of the firm
established a philosophy dedicated to the protection of its clients’
constitutional freedoms, respect for their individual circumstances, and
dedication |
to the guidance of each individual client through the complicated, sometimes
frightening, and often frustrating process known as the criminal justice system.
The section provides criminal law services at all levels and in all regions of
North Carolina, including misdemeanor and felony trial defense and
post-conviction appellate work in both state and federal court.
Over the years, many criminal law practitioners, both prosecutorial and defense,
honed their skills in the criminal law section at Cheshire Parker. In 1995,
Moira Bitzenhofer joined the section and would become its senior paralegal. The
following year,
John Keating Wiles joined the section
as an attorney, and, in 1997,
Brad Bannon joined the
firm as an attorney. In 2003, Ben Spiker joined the section as a paralegal, and
in 2007, Winnie Titchener joined the section as an administrative assistant, and
Collin Cook joined the section as its newest attorney.
The section also works closely with a number of specialized investigators,
mitigation specialists, and experts in various fields, whose expertise is often
tapped to assist each client as needed.
Consistent with the philosophy of its founding member, the criminal law section
is comprised of a team of people dedicated to giving clients quality and
individualized representation, no matter what type of case it is.
